Today’s prompt in the #slowandkindjanuary writin Today’s prompt in the #slowandkindjanuary writing challenge is “faraway feeling.”

At first I was stumped …. I thought about faraway places like Hawaii, Venice, Alaska, Norway. But I haven’t been to all of those places yet so they don’t all have “feelings” associated with them.

But then it came to me …

There is one time when I experience a faraway feeling. Actually, it’s not one time. It happens to me a lot. Can you guess?

It’s starting a new big project. Or embarking on a big new goal. Whether it’s a running goal, a work project, a long road trip, or a new book the finish line seems so far away. I have that moment of doubt. It feels impossible. That’s the “faraway feeling” kicking in.

In fact, the end game feels so faraway I can’t even see it clearly. There are shadows and corners obstructing the view.

The best way to deal with the faraway feeling is to just get started. It’s true what they say. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step.”

For me, that first step is planning. I break big projects into small pieces. And schedule little bits of time to work on them each day.

I celebrate milestones and little wins along the way. Crossing tasks off my list feels so rewarding.

It’s amazing how easy it is to get to that faraway place with just one step at a time.

And coffee. Coffee also helps me conquer long distances.

You’d think by now I wouldn’t let the hugeness of a new endeavor overwhelm me. But I still do. Every single time.

Luckily I also have the tools to get me from the starting line to the finish line. I just have to remember to use them.

Lucy is 1!! 🎂🥳🎉🐾 We celebrated this s Lucy is 1!! 🎂🥳🎉🐾

We celebrated this sweet girl all day long.

Pup cups, a visit to the pet store, a birthday cookie, birthday accessories, and even a cake. She loved it!

And so did Milo. He thought it was his birthday too. But he did not like her hat.

Partying is hard work though. They didn’t want to get out bed this morning!

Whispered words…. “You can do it.” These f Whispered words….

“You can do it.” These four words have got me through so many hard, scary, stressful, new situations. They’ve helped me find strength I didn’t know I had. Stay calm in difficult situations. Take risks and chase my dreams.

Rarely does anyone else hear them, but “You can do it,” is my personal mantra.

I saw these Vienna Fingers in the store the other I saw these Vienna Fingers in the store the other day and was overcome with a wave of nostalgia.

I hadn’t thought of the cookies in years. I’m sure I walked part them a zillion times (I don’t spend much time in the cookie aisle) without even noticing them. But for some reason, they caught my eye on Sunday.

These were my favorite cookies growing up. I always preferred them to Oreos (I think because we bought double stuff kind and I didn’t like the filling).

But mostly because they were part of our weekly tea ritual. Every Thursday we’d have tea with my Grandma (always Lipton - she pinched her pennies, but not when it came to tea).

Sometimes we’d have special treats-like black and white cookies, crumb cake, or Angel food cake. But Vienna Fingers were always in the cookie jar. And I always had at least one (but usually about 5) before we left.

I’m so excited I bought these cookies. I’ve been dunking them in my tea each night and remembering Grandma.

Even though it’s been almost 15 years since out last tea with together, I feel like I’m sitting in her dining room at the blond wood table covered in a plastic tablecloth.

The Wheel of Fortune plays softly in the background. A faint smell of Jean Naté is in the air. The brown carpet feels soft beneath my feet when I slip off my shoes. And the cookies taste exactly the same.

PS: when I bought these cookies I had no idea there’d be a “nostalgic taste” prompt - but when I looked at this challenge I smiled. I knew there was a reason I saw these cookies at the grocery store this week.

What anchors me? For me, it’s these pups. No What anchors me?

For me, it’s these pups.

No matter what is going on in my life, how busy or bad my day, how sad the news or frightful the weather they are always here ready to shower me with kisses and unconditional love.

And they always have the same needs - food, water, fresh air, and a little love. They get me out of bed, motivate me to move, and show me that their is good in every day.

Together we venture outdoors in every kind of weather. We seek out new paths and new adventures.

I swear they can sense my mood, and know when I need a little extra love.

And even at their worst, which is not all that bad, they are just being dogs. Young dogs who sometimes make bad choices.
There’s no spite or anger or behind their actions.

They’ve taught me patience and perseverance. The fact that my mere presence caused them to literally jump with joy is the most humbling thing I’ve ever experienced.

These pups are a constant reminder of what’s important. And a great reason to let everything else go.

I don’t know what I did to deserve Milo and Lucy. But I’m grateful every day that they are mine.

The scent of calm…. The fresh ocean breeze. Sa The scent of calm….

The fresh ocean breeze. Salty and crisp. Earthy sea grasses.

A faint scent of lingering coconut sunscreen.

Sweet taffy and kettle corn mix with the warm, sugary smell of homemade ice cream cones.

The quiet of a deserted. The sun melting into the horizon.

That is the scent of calm.

Currently reading …. The Enigma of Room 622, b Currently reading ….

The Enigma of Room 622, by Joël Dicker.

Wow! First off- this book has 574. I’ve read the first 410
since Monday. (It’s been a lot of late nights and “just one more chapter.)

There are so many stories woven into this novel. So many layers. So many levels of deception.

My brain is a jumble of “what is” and “I wonders” and it’s great fun.

I’m impressed by the authors ability to weave such an intricate plot line. And I wonder how he kept it all straight when he was writing. And I can’t wait to see how it ends.

I’ve got 160 pages to go and nothing on my calendar (after writing in the morning) tomorrow.

Do you think I can do it?

If the hook sounds interesting, stay tuned for a review when I’m finished. One thing I’m going to try this year is reviewing books more regularly.

And maybe finally figuring out #goodreads.

☕️brew some coffee
😌clear the clutter
🕯️light a candle
💻 grab my laptop (but leave my phone behind)
🛋️get comfy with a blanket and the pups
And write.

My routine is pretty simple. Coffee is a must-have. And my laptop. Everything else is optional.

But I do love the candle. It makes me feel cozy and reminds me how lucky I am to write each day.

Do you have any must-haves for writing?
